Step-by-Step Guide to Scissor Lift Operator Training Victoria

Scissor lifts are essential in various industries, providing a safe and efficient way to work at heights. However, operating them without proper training can lead to workplace accidents and legal complications. If you are in Victoria and need to complete Scissor Lift Operator Training, this guide will walk you through the entire process.

At VIF Safety Training, we offer on-site safety training programs, ensuring compliance with industry standards and workplace regulations. Employers must ensure that their employees are trained and certified to operate scissor lifts safely.

Why Scissor Lift Training is Important

Every day, workplace accidents involving aerial lifts occur due to untrained operation. These incidents can result in injuries, equipment damage, or even fatalities. In British Columbia, regulations require operators to be adequately trained to prevent such risks.

WorkSafeBC outlines specific regulations for aerial lifts under OHS Section 13: Ladders, Scaffolds, and Temporary Work Platforms. Scissor lift training follows CSA Standard B354.2, ensuring operators understand the proper handling and safety measures.

Employers are responsible for:

  • Providing proper training to all scissor lift operators
  • Supervising and monitoring trained operators in the workplace
  • Ensuring compliance with safety regulations to avoid legal consequences

Without proper training, operating a scissor lift can be a liability, making Scissor Lift Operator Training in Victoria essential for workplace safety and compliance.

Step 1: Understanding the Training Requirements

Before enrolling in a scissor lift training program, it is crucial to understand what the training includes. The program covers:

  • Equipment operation basics
  • Pre-use inspections
  • Hazard identification
  • Safe handling techniques
  • Emergency procedures

Since September 1, 2021, training must comply with CSA Standard B335-15, and refresher training should take place every three years. This ensures that operators maintain their skills and stay up-to-date with safety standards.

Step 2: Choosing a Reliable Training Provider

Selecting the right training provider is crucial. VIF Safety Training offers on-site safety training programs for aerial lifts, including scissor lifts, ensuring that all operators meet industry regulations.

When choosing a training provider, consider:

  • Whether they offer training that complies with WorkSafeBC regulations
  • If the training is conducted on-site for convenience
  • The comprehensiveness of the training, including both theory and hands-on practice

Step 3: Enrolling in the Scissor Lift Training Program

Once you choose a training provider, the next step is to enroll in the course. VIF Safety Training ensures that all participants receive detailed instructions on scissor lift operation. The training process typically includes:

  1. Classroom Instruction – Covers theoretical aspects such as safety protocols, regulations, and best practices.
  2. Equipment Inspection Training – Understanding how to perform pre-use inspections to identify potential hazards.
  3. Hands-on Practical Training – Operators practice using a scissor lift under the supervision of a qualified trainer.
  4. Assessment and Certification – After successful completion, operators receive certification, proving they have met the required standards.

Step 4: Employer Responsibilities After Training

Training does not end after certification. Employers must ensure that operators continue to meet safety standards through ongoing supervision and compliance monitoring.

Employers should:

  • Regularly assess operator performance to ensure safe practices are followed
  • Provide refresher training every three years, as required by CSA Standard B335-15
  • Ensure scissor lift operations comply with WorkSafeBC regulations

Employers must exercise due diligence to ensure a safe work environment, as all work must be carried out without undue risk of injury or disease.

Step 5: Maintaining Compliance and Safety

Even after completing Scissor Lift Operator Training in Victoria, ongoing safety practices are necessary to prevent workplace accidents. Operators should:

  • Conduct pre-use inspections before every operation
  • Be aware of hazards, such as unstable ground or overhead obstacles
  • Follow emergency procedures in case of equipment failure
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required

Failure to adhere to safety guidelines can lead to accidents, regulatory fines, and liability issues for employers. Regular refresher training ensures that operators stay compliant and maintain workplace safety.

Conclusion

Completing Scissor Lift Operator Training in Victoria is a crucial step toward ensuring safety and compliance in the workplace. Employers are responsible for training their staff, providing supervision, and maintaining safety standards.

Hear From Those We’ve Trained

I was recently re-certified on Telehandler and class 1,4,&5 Forklift through VIF Safety Training. Owner/Instructor Darrell was very knowledgeable and kept the group engaged throughout the course. Both workers with no experience on the equipment, and experienced operators like myself benefited from Darrell’s approach to instructing. Everyone in the course left understanding the regulations, safety procedures and hands on confidence of equipment specific to our worksite. Darrell’s relaxed and professional instruction especially helped the workers new to the equipment. We will be having VIF Safety return for more courses in Fall Arrest and Lock Out Tag Out.

VIF and owner instructor Darrell was the most informative relaxed and on point of any I've taken. From very experienced as myself to new operators of telehandlers and forklifts we all benefited from a well balanced training session. Highly recommended
