5 Key Benefits of Fall Protection Training In Victoria

At VIF Safety Training, safety isn’t just a checkbox—it’s the core of what we do. Based in Victoria, BC, we bring hands-on knowledge, real-world experience, and a commitment to practical safety education. Led by Darrell Block, a seasoned mobile equipment operator and Red Seal Industrial Electrician, our training is rooted in the realities of working with heavy equipment and lockout procedures. One of the most critical areas of safety training is fall protection.

Whether you work in construction, maintenance, or operate mobile equipment, understanding fall hazards and how to prevent them is essential. Here are five key benefits of Fall Protection Training in Victoria, especially when you choose to train with VIF Safety Training.

1. Real-World Knowledge You Can Apply Immediately

Fall protection training is only effective if it makes sense on the job. Darrell Block, the owner and lead instructor at VIF Safety Training, has 18 years of experience operating mobile equipment and has worked as an Electrical Shop Supervisor, Maintenance Manager, and Lockout Coordinator. This background ensures the training goes beyond theory.

Our training reflects the actual challenges workers face. You’re not just learning regulations—you’re understanding how to apply them during real tasks. That means when you’re back on site, the information stays relevant, practical, and easy to act on.

2. Instruction From an Ives Certified Trainer

Certification matters, and so does who you learn from. Darrell has been an Ives Certified trainer since 2018. Ives is a well-known name in mobile equipment and safety training, and being certified means the training you receive meets rigorous standards.

It also means you’re learning from someone who not only knows the content but knows how to teach it effectively. As a former instructor at North Island College, Darrell has the classroom experience to make training clear and accessible—even if you’re completely new to fall protection protocols.

3. Focus on Safety Culture, Not Just Compliance

Yes, fall protection training helps with meeting safety requirements—but it should also build a culture of responsibility. At VIF Safety Training, there’s a strong emphasis on practical, experience-based learning. That helps develop a mindset of caution and care, not just rule-following.

With Darrell’s background in the Canadian Forces and his years managing safety systems, he knows what it means to work in high-risk environments. He brings that perspective into the training, helping workers recognize hazards, communicate effectively, and build habits that lead to fewer incidents.

4. Learn Lockout Procedures That Support Fall Safety

One of the often overlooked aspects of fall protection is how it intersects with other safety protocols, like lockout procedures. At VIF Safety Training, we incorporate real-world experience with lockout systems into the instruction process.

Darrell has worked extensively as a Lockout Coordinator. He understands how important it is to have control over energy sources before working at heights. With his guidance, trainees learn how fall protection fits into a broader system of workplace safety—something especially important in industrial and maintenance environments.

5. Veteran-Led Instruction That Instills Confidence

It’s one thing to get trained. It’s another to walk away feeling confident in your ability to stay safe. That’s the difference when you train with VIF Safety Training. Darrell’s leadership background, including 8 years of service in the Royal Canadian Navy, brings a structured, reliable tone to the training environment.

As a proud Canadian Forces Veteran, Darrell brings discipline, clarity, and trust into the learning process. When your instructor has been in critical, high-pressure environments, you know you’re getting training that has been shaped by serious, real-life situations. That confidence can be the edge you need when making split-second safety decisions on the job.

Conclusion

Fall Protection Training in Victoria is more than a formality—it’s a crucial investment in your safety and your team’s well-being. At VIF Safety Training, every course is designed with hands-on knowledge, certified instruction, and a deep commitment to real-world safety.

Hear From Those We’ve Trained

I was recently re-certified on Telehandler and class 1,4,&5 Forklift through VIF Safety Training. Owner/Instructor Darrell was very knowledgeable and kept the group engaged throughout the course. Both workers with no experience on the equipment, and experienced operators like myself benefited from Darrell’s approach to instructing. Everyone in the course left understanding the regulations, safety procedures and hands on confidence of equipment specific to our worksite. Darrell’s relaxed and professional instruction especially helped the workers new to the equipment. We will be having VIF Safety return for more courses in Fall Arrest and Lock Out Tag Out.

I have taken safety training in all forms of machine handling for many years. Literally a dozen times. VIF and owner instructor Darrell was the most informative relaxed and on point of any I've taken. From very experienced as myself to new operators of telehandlers and forklifts we all benefited from a well balanced training session. Highly recommended

Recently had Darrell in our shop at Campbell River Boatland for forklift training. It was a combination of newbies and recertifications, and he handled both groups with ease. Professional, knowledgeable, and flexible working with us after we had to reschedule. Definitely recommend!
